We link overeating and weight gain intellectually but they don't become associated neurologically in the same way as eating and the resulting endorphin flood. The choices made are about short term easily linked events, eat food get endorphins, which our brain easily associates, versus long term hard to link events, overeat and gain weight. They are more a long the lines of: do I want to escape this chronic pain by flooding my brain with tasty neurotransmitters or continue feeling the pain. So yes, being fat often results from the culmination of many choices, none of those choices are really: do I want to be fat or not. Some are due to medications and a lot are due to psychological health. Some are a matter of internal medicine, a thyroid issues say. There are other reasons that lead to people being fat other than a fast or slow metabolism. They were encouraged to conform to social norms. Members of the Silent Generation got their name because they focused on their careers, ignoring activism. Gen Z will closely resemble the last generation of their class, the Silent Generation. An "I've got mine" attitude, and lack of social empathy. While that seems like a great goal, it definitely leads to the mentality you're talking about. In adulthood, they benefit from most of the social issues championed by the prior generation, and the result is that they never have to deal with many real hardships. Assuming the trend continues, Gen Z would fall into an "artist" or adaptive role, generally characterized by over protection in their up bringing.
